I’m a founding member of The Magpie Haiku & Tanka Poets, who met for the first time at Annie’s Book Company in Calgary in the spring of 2001. Since then, we’ve published two anthologies, given readings, presented workshops and participated in local literary events, such as the annual Writers Weekend at the downtown library and When Words Collide at The Carriage House Inn. We launched our first anthology at Author! Author ! Bookstore and the second one at The Rose and Crown Pub, thanks to local author and publisher Kirk Ramdath.
Why did we name ourselves after a bird that some people don’t like? Well, we happen to think that the magpie is a beautiful bird, and it’s also highly intelligent. As a matter of fact, it’s one of a handful of animals that recognize themselves in a mirror. Pretty smart!
We meet on a somewhat regular basis to share our work, write poetry and have a good time. This usually involves plenty of laughter, plus food and drink. If you’re interested in joining us and learning more about the exquisite poetry forms known as haiku and tanka, let me know.
